Green School

At Taranaki’s first Green School, ICE Electrical is creating something truly unique to meet the specific needs of this innovative project.

As the Electrical Services contractor for Kina (Stage 2) and iHub (Stage 3), ICE has been responsible for powering all contractors involved as well as heating and ventilation, and the spaces.

The Kina project consists of eight classrooms and four resource rooms, says Christian Gavisan-Moratti, ICE project manager. It is currently at the first-fix and pre-wiring stage.

“Working with curved walls and a ceiling which visually melds into the walls has required us to come up with some creative solutions for this project, it’s been a really rewarding process.
“Part of our client’s brief was to ensure wiring didn’t penetrate through the structure unless it really had to so everything we’ve done has been with that in mind. This way of cabling maximises energy efficiency and minimises heat loss,” he says. “It’s the fine detailing that makes a big difference here.”

ICE runs all of the wiring underneath the structures and then up the walls if and where needed. They adapt the electrical to work with the way insulation has been utilised too.

“The lighting is a real point of difference in this job too. We’re using standard lighting and working to reflect the curvature of the ceiling and walls creating a style that works well within the space.”

ICE began working on the Kina project in May 2021, and the job has experienced the inevitable impact of Covid19 lockdowns and supply challenges, a common industry issue at present. The framework is already being developed for iHub/Stage 3 and ICE will transition directly to this at the completion of Kina.

“Working on innovative projects is where we thrive,” Christian says. “It’s a real privilege to be part of powering this new wave in structural design.”
